7 Tips for Finding Free Beauty Samples

free-beauty-samples, beauty-sample-tips

So, I have a tiny confession to make. I, Megan, am a sample addict! I get a huge rush when I see a new little sample package in the post with my name on it, or when I get up to the makeup counter at the mall and see that some are being given away! In fact, as you can see from the picture above, I have a whole box just full of the samples I've collected (and these are just small sizes as deluxe sizes are stored with the rest of my makeup).

I love being able to try a new product before I decide to buy it, or having small sizes of things that are handy for travel. With that being said, I thought other people might be wondering how they, too, could get their hands on samples of today's hottest brands. Here are seven tips and tricks you can use to build up your very own sample stash!

GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND.
The quickest and easiest way to find samples of products is simply by doing a Google search for them. You can keep your query as broad as "free samples", or you can narrow it down to specific products and brands (i.e. "free mascara samples" or "free Clinique samples"). Within seconds you'll have tons of links at your fingertips to peruse in order to find the samples of your choice!

FOLLOW YOUR FAVORITE BRANDS ON FACEBOOK AND TWITTER.
Another way to receive samples is by following brands you love on social media. A lot of times brands will give out samples of their new products exclusively through Facebook, which will require you to like their page and fill out a small survey or watch a quick video. Other times, brands will do flash giveaways through their Twitter accounts. The plus side is that you'll be able to receive information from the brand in real time and can keep a watch on when samples go live versus having to hope you stumble across what you want on Google.

SIGN UP FOR FREE SAMPLE WEBSITES.
If you feel like having to do all the work yourself to find samples is too overwhelming, there are websites dedicated to scouring the web for new samples. Every day they'll post links to all kinds of samples from beauty to food to pet products and everything in between.  Some will send you a daily round up email, and some will ask that you follow them on Facebook to get updates that way. Most will have tags so you can browse exactly what you want at your leisure. I'm partial to Hunt4Freebies!

CHECK THE WEBSITES OF MAJOR CHAIN STORES LIKE WALMART AND TARGET.
These kinds of stores frequently give out samples of all kinds of things directly through their website. It's best to check early in the day as samples are very limited via these channels and get requested pretty fast. Also, Target is known to do a yearly beauty bag full of full size, deluxe size, and small size samples, no purchase necessary! I've gotten one in the past that came with an adorable makeup bag, small samples of lipstick, deluxe samples of lotion and shampoo, and a full size lip balm by Neutrogena!

SIGN UP TO BE A SEPHORA BEAUTY INSIDER.
If you are a frequent Sephora shopper, and let's face it, most of us beauty fanatics are, then it is essential that you sign up to be a Sephora Beauty Insider. It's completely free, and when you purchase your goodies, you receive points that you can rack up for deluxe samples. Also, when you purchase online you get three free samples with every order. Plus, they are always running specials with codes for even more samples. Lastly, every year on your birthday you get a free gift! Two years ago, I got a decent sized bottle of Philosophy's Vanilla Birthday Cake body wash. Last year, I received a Fresh - Sugar lip duo. This year, I'll receive Benefit's They're Real! mascara and Watt's Up! highlighter. You'd be insane not to sign up!

CHECK YOUR LOCAL MAKEUP COUNTERS.
Makeup counters are a great place to look for samples. There are usually plenty of fragrance samples to go around. And sometimes if you book a make over or are even just really interested in a brand, the sales associates will give you a little something to take home and try. On occasion, brands will run specials with coupons you can find in the newspaper or online that will allow you to get deluxe and full size samples of certain products at the makeup counter. It's always a good idea to check!

NEVER BE ASHAMED TO ASK FOR SAMPLES FROM MAKEUP STORES.
This is my last point, and I think it is a good one. In a lot of makeup stores, if you are on the fence about a product, sales reps might be able to hook you up with a sample in hopes that you'll come back and buy a full size later. There is nothing wrong with politely asking if there are any samples you can take with you of a product you'd like to test first before taking the plunge. Just don't come across as rude or demanding as that will likely lead to you leaving empty handed. In the past I've received a small bottle of makeup remover from Bobbi Brown and a small pot of Vanilla Puff Dusting Powder from LUSH, among other things.

In the end, tons of samples are out there!  Sometimes it just takes a little patience and searching to find what you want, and usually it is totally worth it.

Do you like receiving samples? How do you find them? Do you use them immediately or save them up like I do?

I have a sample I received from Escada a while back and it was lush! 7. They don't ship most of free samples to my country, but I often get some from stores :3. When we lived in Japan, they gave a huge pile of samples, everywhere *_* ! Some web shops are also generous with samples when you order something.
    A nice article :3

    1. Aw, I'm so sorry to hear that! You'd think that global brands would ship everywhere! That's interesting to know that Japan is great about giving out samples! The only web stores I've experienced receiving samples from have been Sephora and Macy's, but they are really good about giving you samples in store as well!

I'm really glad you enjoyed the article! x

    1. I'm so glad you liked the post! I'm happy to meet another 'sample queen'! I think if more people realized that samples aren't always tiny one use packets, and that deluxe samples can last you a good while if you're careful, we'd have more 'sample queens'! Plus, they are great for travel, especially as so many airports have carry on restrictions these days!

If you ever come across any good samples, feel free to drop me a line! We can swap links! x

  9. I love how you guys get amazing samples in America! i snatched a butt load of samples the week I was in MN (I also spent a butt load of money buying samples as well!)
The people here are stingy with samples, you only get them if you buy things. And not always when you buy things, so you usually have to chat them up. And men SAs are usually more likely to give you samples compared to women SAs....just something I've noticed. And don't even get me started on the return policy!
Anywho, enough wiht my rambling! Great post Megan! As always! xx

    1. I'm getting more and more surprised to hear that the samples we get here in America aren't the norm in other countries! You'd think that it would be sort of a universal thing! Return policies at so many places are definitely crap! I especially hate with things like DVDs how a lot of stores won't take them back if they are opened, but at the same time how will you find out if they are defective if you don't open them! Makes no sense!

Never worry about your rambles, sweety! Do it as much as you like because I'll always listen! xx

  10. I had a whole drawer full of samples up until a few weeks ago (I took them into work for people to grab what they wanted - there was far too many for me to get though!)
Sometimes I find the amount of product given is a bit small especially for face products but I think perfume samplers are the perfect size for a good week or twos trial - still trying to find my signature scent trawling through my many sample vials! xx

    1. I agree about the size of face products. Sometimes you barely have enough for one use! Same with hair products! My hair is quite long, and sample packs almost never have enough product for a thorough test. I find that the best face product samples are eyeliners and mascaras as it is pretty much required that they be of a larger size for testing. I have a deluxe sample of Lancome's Hypnose Star that is taking me forever to get through because it is quite decent sized!

Perfume samplers are my real weakness! I'm always disappointed when it comes as a single use wipe versus a vial! Hope you were able to sign up for the perfume samples I linked to! I'm excited for them to come in! x

  11. These are such great ideas, although the majority of my beauty samples come from my Magazines. I've never really tried picking them up from beauty counters, I just find that it's rather awkward and they think I'm after something for free, even a sample. I do love the little samples I can get in Lush though! They're so friendly, I don't feel bad asking!

Great tips, lovely blog :) I followed xx

    1. I wish we did beauty samples in magazines the way you do over there! I've gotten a few mags from the UK, and I love how there have been samples of things like Clinique, or even full sized mascaras and eyeliners! I'd hoard magazines if they did they here!

A lot of beauty counters have small samples waiting to be given out. Especially the fragrance counters as some of them have small trial vials for people who ask. And, of course, there are always the free gifts with purchase!

Glad you liked the blog! I followed you back! xx

  12. I find where people go wrong is walking up to a makeup counter demanding a sample of a high end product, such as Dior Nudeskin, and not having shown any interest. I like to have a little browse around first, ask a couple of questions about the product and do a patch test. The only time I generally ask for a sample is if I can't figure out what foundation colour truly matches my skin. If the counter assistant knows you're considering a genuine purchase then can sometimes give you a little pump or squeeze from a tester into a little pot to take away.

    1. I agree! Being rude and demanding is an absolute sample no-no! And asking to receive something for free in store when you've shown no interest in the product or anything else is disgraceful. Brands are usually willing to do a little something to get people interested, like giving out samples, but they aren't going to do so if you are being selfish or a brat. My counter samples have come without asking, just general interest after buying other products from them. x
