Top 10 Tips for Growing Your Blog

top-10-tips-for-growing-your-blog

Hello, beauties! Happy hump day! So, lately I've been getting a lot of emails and tweets asking me how I've grown my blog. I'll immediately preface this post by saying obviously I'm a newbie when it comes to serious blogging, so I don't have everything figured out by far. But since I've been getting a lot of questions, I thought it might be a good idea to put up a post giving those who are wondering some of my tips. So, let's get to it!

-----

You've got your blog name sorted, your design is on point, your content is compelling, and now you're ready to really get your blog out there! You look around and see other bloggers with healthy readerships and engagement, and you want to know what you can do to get your blog on track. Here are ten pointers to get you started!

1. Get on a consistent blogging schedule! When I first jumped into the blogging world, this was the one tip that got reiterated to me constantly. What my blogging schedule looks like was the first question that Patrick from Patrick's Place asked me when I was looking for advice to transition into serious blogging. Take a look at your schedule and see what you can feasibly do each week. If it's two days, go for it! If it's five days, go for it! Try it out for awhile and see how it feels, then adjust accordingly. When you get on a schedule, so do your readers, and they learn what to expect from you.

2. Consider using a tweet scheduler like Hoot Suite! Life is busy. Not everyone can stay by their computer each day managing their social media. If you don't have loads of time to dedicate to Twitter, Hoot Suite, which was brought to my attention by Sophia from Tattooed Tealady, is a great way to schedule tweets to promote your blog and latest posts while you work or sleep. It's important to stay connected with your readers, and this is one way to do it!

3. Promote, promote, promote! First off, when I say this, I definitely don't mean overkill! It can be really annoying to have a Twitter Feed full of tweet after tweet of promotion by the same blogger. However, us bloggers have to get our name out there somehow, so don't feel bad about putting your blog or latest post on social media. Get your links circulating, and if you're promoting on Twitter, don't forget to use relevant hashtags.

4. Make blog goals! If you've been reading my blog for a bit, you'll remember that last month I posted up my blog goals for August. I'd been working out blog goals for awhile, but I'd never really put them to paper (or internet!). Imogen from The Bluebird and the Robin told me that putting goals down concretely increased their chances of being met. At the same time, Becky from Becky Bedbug had just posted her growth plan, and when I mentioned I wanted to do the same, she was so encouraging!

Let me tell you, making goals to work towards really helped to catapult me forward. Even if you keep them solely to yourself, having a clear vision really helps you get your blog on track.

5. Engage with the blogging community! You would think this would be self-evident, but I've seen so many bloggers say that they don't chat with other bloggers much. One of the best parts about blogging is making loads of new blogger friends! I've found Twitter to be the best place to engage with other bloggers as they tend to see you there a lot quicker than they do on their blogs.

However, don't neglect commenting on other blogs. And when you do, make sure you've read the post in full, and that you leave a well put-together comment that actually pertains to the post's content! None of this, "Great blog! Follow me!" business! Bloggers get so many of those comments, and the best way to stand out is to be genuine, read their content, and engage in a meaningful way. Other bloggers will thank you for it.

6. Participate in blog chats! Blog chats are a great resource and loads of fun. Not only do you get to chat with like-minded individuals about something you love, but you'll pick up loads of tips, make tons of friends, and be able to get your blog circulating! Search for chats that fit your blog and pencil them in each week. Right now, I participate in four chats weekly, and occasionally pop in to other chats if I have time. You don't have to do that many, but at least try to make one part of your weekly blog routine. Speaking of penciling things in...

7. Get a calendar and use it! Seriously, I mean it! Because I like having something physical to keep my life together in, I bought a calendar specifically for the blog to help me keep up with all of my blog duties. I add each of my posts for the week, times for blog chats, when I'm going to take photos, when I'm going to answer emails, everything! I even schedule in my magazine runs so I remember to pop to the store and pick them up. Getting organized will be such a boon to your blog.

8. Dedicate a notebook to your blog! This goes along with having a calendar. Pick up a small notebook that you can use to keep track of all of your blog ideas, wish lists, goals, tips, anything blog related! Having a place dedicated to all these things will help you when it comes time to think up a new post, or you want to remember what product it was you wanted to pick up for review. Plus, it's nice to not have to search all over for each of these things individually. Total time saver!

9. Work on your SEO! SEO?! What's that? SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and it helps your blog get found by all the random Googlers out there. Things like post titles, photo tags, keywords and phrases, all of these are things you need to think of when you write each post. I am definitely not an SEO whiz. I've mostly implemented things from Ellie at XOMisse's blog posts on SEO. So if you want to know all the ins and outs, have a browse through her posts and she'll give you the skinny!

10. Install Google Analytics! Google Analytics is a fantastic tool for bloggers! It give you all sorts of data that you can use to really target readers and get your blog running at full potential. It let's you know your daily page views, how many unique visitors you have, how long visitors stay on the blog, and even if they are new or returning. You'll also find out where your readers are from, which posts they read most, and what searches people are using to find your blog. XOMisse has posts on Analytics, too, so check those out to get going today!

-----

So, that's it, lovelies! Those are my top ten tips for getting your blog on the path to growth! I'll admit, some of growth is luck. Absolute luck. But if you do these things, you'll be setting your blog up for success. Don't fret if it takes a bit to start seeing a return on these changes. Keep at it, don't get discouraged, and don't be afraid to tweak things to work better for you.

If you have any questions or want some individual advice, feel free to send me an email at megan@theaestheticedit.com. And I'm always up for a chat on Twitter, so add me there if you'd like, too!

Now, go! Go forth and build the blog of your dreams! I believe in each and every one of you, and know that you all can do it. It's all there inside of you, you've just got to let it shine. Sending tons of glitzy, sparkling blogger dust your way!

  1. Great advice here! I'm doing a fe bits myself and its amazing how far a sincere comment after reading another's post or tweet goes. Currently blogging 6 days a week which is a bit hectic but I'm hoping that once I've got a good back catalogue of good content I can have a better idea of what people like to read and at what times.

  4. I love all of these tips Megan! How hard you work on Little Miss Average really comes across, in this post and also in your blog content and design and interaction with fellow bloggers. I'd say another top tip is to be kind and pleasant! Which you are a great example of :) It never hurts to send a nice tweet or post a lovely compliment and this is something I've really learned from you. I can be a little shy but I've started to really reach out on social media and chit chat away with others, and it reaps so many rewards, not least the chance to make some fab new pals!xxx

I'm a bit slack with my posts since going back to work after the summer holidays, but I'm working on trying to post 2-3 times a week so it's all a bit more regular. I even tested out Hoot Suite last night to schedule a tweet for my latest post while I was at work today! I've now got the kettle on, my blogging notebook and diary beside me, and am spending the rest of the evening getting organised! Thanks so much for all the hard work you do with your blog - we all appreciate it SO much! :) xx
