The Starting Off Project | Eyeshadow

Hello, beauties! Today I'm coming to you with the next entry in The Starting Off Project, and it's all about one of the most fun to experiment with products, eyeshadow. For those not in the know, eyeshadow is this funky little product that you apply to the eyelids to create all sorts of looks (obvi!). From natural to glam, smoky to shimmery, anything you can imagine, you can create with a steady hand and a little bit of patience.

Eyeshadow comes in several different forms, but most commonly it comes in a powder, either pressed or loose. It also comes in pencil sticks, creams, gels, and liquids. There is truly a formula for everyone. Then there is the tricky matter of finish. Do you want your eyeshadow to be matte? What about shimmery or glittery? Frost, pearl, satin, it's totally up to your own personal tastes!

When it comes to packaging, there are loads of options to choose from. You can pick up single shadows, duos, trios, quads, and palettes (which are typically five and over, but can be used for two or more). Single shadows leave putting color combinations up to the artist, whereas most duos, trios, quads, and palettes are coordinated for easy to create looks.

To properly apply eyeshadow, you first need to pick the right tools. For beginners, I suggest sticking with the small sponge applicators that come with most eyeshadows until you get more comfortable. As you get more proficient with applying basic eyeshadow, you can start to branch out to different brushes if you like. And don't forget your fingers can also be helpful to blend and apply!

Before you get started creating your looks, it's best to apply some sort of base for the eyeshadow to adhere to. Especially if you have oily eyelids. You don't want your hard work sliding all over the place! Most people swear by Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion, $12.00. You can also use eyeliner as a base or layer a cream under the powder for ultimate pigmentation and longevity.

Now that you've picked out your shadows, your formula, your finish, your tools and your base, it's time to make up those peepers! While you can just apply a wash of one color over the lid, you'll want a touch of depth to really make your eyes pop. The easiest look is the two color look. You'll choose two coordinating colors, one darker, one lighter. Take the lighter color and apply it over the entire lid. Then take the darker color and apply it to the outer third of the lid and into the crease. Voila! So chic!

I love eyeshadow, and I have quite a large stash of it. I've got a little of everything, and love creating all sorts of looks. MAC's Eyeshadow in Espresso, $15.00, is one of my favorite do it all singles. It's great as an eyeshadow, smoky liner, and brow filler. A win in any book, I'd say! A duo that I've been using since high school would be Clinique's All About Shadow Duo in Like Mink, $20.00. This baby has seen me through many a situation, both casual and dressy. It is fantastic for understated, neutral looks with a bit of shimmer.

And there you have it. See! Eyeshadow is easy peasy, lemon squeezy! Once you get the hang of it and develop an eye for color combos, you can do all sorts of looks. Let your artistic side out and, above all, have fun with it!

What are your favorite eyeshadows to wear? What is your go-to eyeshadow look?
