e.l.f. Studio Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 - Review + Swatch

e.l.f. Studio Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20, $3.00
As a makeup junkie, I love wearing makeup as much as possible. However, when I'm going to be home for the day, or I only need to run out and grab some groceries, I don't like wearing a full face of products. I like to turn to handy dandy tinted moisturizers and those little complexion miracles, BB creams. Not quite ready to plunk down the cash for the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer, I picked up the e.l.f. Studio Tinted Moisturizer, and unfortunately I wasn't impressed.

The e.l.f. Studio Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 is a budget friendly drugstore buy meant to keep your skin moisturized whilst providing a subtle hint of color to even out your skintone when you're not up to wearing full coverage foundation. Alongside the SPF 20, it boasts aloe, cucumber, and vitamins A, C, and E to help keep your skin looking its best. It only comes in seven shades, and being a pale lady, I picked up the lightest shade available, porcelain.

Eager to try it out, I rushed home to throw a touch on, and I was really disappointed in the results. Porcelain is several shades too dark for my fair skin. In order to make the product work, I had to buff it in quite a lot and apply a lighter powder on top. It is also quite yellow which makes my skin look sallow and sickly. Definitely not the effect I was going for! It also has a slight sunscreen scent that doesn't thrill me, but at least I know it's doing it's job protecting my skin from the sun.

The product itself is a tad thick and requires you to work with it a bit to get decent coverage. Even still, I find that it applies a bit patchy with some spots being far more pigmented than others. Moisture-wise, the e.l.f. Studio Tinted Moisturizer isn't that bad. I wear my tinted moisturizers and BB creams over a thin layering of my regular moisturizer, but you can still tell if the product will be drying or not. For dry skin, I don't think it would be enough, but normal to oily skin might do okay with just this.

The real bright spot to this product is the signature e.l.f. packaging. e.l.f. always does a fantastic job making their products look higher end, and the lovely matte squeeze tube the Studio Tinted Moisturizer comes in is no exception. You could almost mistake it for something from NARS! The only downside is that the bottle is quite tiny. Full size clocks in at 0.88 fl. oz., so less than a full oz. of product. If you won't wear it often, that's alright, but otherwise that's a really small amount of product compared to similar items from other brands.

In the end, you sort of get what you pay for. I know people love e.l.f. and it's known for good quality products without the high end price tag, but I'm not sure what I expected a $3.00 tinted moisturizer to do. A quick search on Google shows that most users love this product except for those with really pale skin, so perhaps someone with a darker complexion will get on with it better. I wouldn't personally recommend this product and do not intend to repurchase, but your mileage may vary.

Have you used the e.l.f. Studio Tinted Moisturizer? What is your favorite tinted moisturizer?

  1. I actually find a lot of drugstore tinted moisturisers and BB creams are far too dark for me, even in the lightest shades. Such a shame!

  2. I tried this tinted moisturizer before and I don't think it's too dark... the problem is that it's seriously orange. I mean, look at it blended into your hand! Is anyone naturally that orange?! It's sort of a shame, because the formula really isn't that bad and of course it's cheap. :P

  3. I wonder how this would fare on my skin, since I have a more tan complexion. I'm concerned with what Rebecca says, in that it looked more orange :/ I have a pretty neutral skin tone but warm foundations always end up looking way too orange on me

  4. Uh oh I'm mega pale so maybe I should steer away from this! x

  5. I have boughten this before and like you, I was really unimpressed. I'm really fair skinned and got the lightest shade and it made me look orangey/ yellowish. I like the packaging but I don't think elf is really good quality, unfortunately. xx

  6. I actually have this and I have EXACTLY to say about it! I normally love elf products, but this is a BIG miss for them..

    Great, detailed review :)

  7. We don't have Elf where I live, but if I ever come across it I definitely won't be picking this up! I have super pale skin too so I know the colour won't suit me .. Thanks for the review! xx

  8. I have this and unfortunately, it doesn't really do anything for my face. I won't repurchase too.
