Birchbox | January 2015 - Review

Birchbox, $10/month
Hello, beauties! It's January, which means the start of a new year for our coveted beauty box subscriptions. It's a new chance for our boxes to wow us with exciting releases, exclusive products, and rediscovered favorites that will have us feeling primped and pampered all year long. This month's theme for Birchbox is Let's Do This, and features items set to get us in gear and start 2015 off right. Let's see if this month's box has us off to the races or backfiring at the starting line!

• COOLA Tinted Matte SPF 30 for Face | Full-Size, $36.00 (Sample, $3.60)
I received this particular sample from COOLA in my March 2014 box. I didn't care for it then, and I don't care for it now. The tube barely holds enough for one good trial, and it's a bit too yellow-y and powdery for my skin. However, it is unscented and works much like Benefit's The POREfessional in smoothing out pores and lines. Otherwise, it's fairly unremarkable in my mind.

• Harvey Prince Ageless | Full-Size, $55.00 (Sample, $2.94)
I love Harvey Prince perfumes, so I'm always stoked to find a new sample from them in my boxes. This month's treat, Ageless, is gorgeously fruity and floral, and totally timeless. With notes of pink grapefruit, pomegranate, mango, jasmine, tuberose, ylang ylang, and sandalwood, I think this is a perfume that would appeal to many women of all ages. Will definitely be wearing Ageless out in the warmer months!

• Lord & Berry Paillettes Glitter Eye Pencil in Black | Full-Size, $18.00 (Sample, $4.50)
This is the second sample in my box that is a repeat as I originally got one in my October 2014 box. Luckily, I love black eyeliner and I'm always down to work a little sparkle into my look. Plus, Lord & Berry is a brand I'd love to explore further, so even though this is sadly a repeat, I'm happy to have another in my stash for creating some glittery looks!

• Number 4 Hair Super Comb Prep & Protect | Full-Size, $32.00 (Sample, $4.80)
I've got really long, thick hair, so I'm always up for trying something to help me get my hair untangled and protect it when I'm styling. Unfortunately, I find the scent of this to be absolutely repulsive. I rarely say that about something as I can tolerate most all scents even if they aren't a personal favorite, but there is something about this product's smell that makes me gag. Will probably pass this on to my mom to see if she gets on with it.

• Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream in Acai Grapefruit | Full-Size, $20.00 (Sample, $2.93)
One of the samples I hear subscribers praising most often is the Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream, so I was fairly excited to receive a small tube in my box this month. I've never been one to really use shaving cream, but I'm willing to give it a go to see if it stands up to all the hype. I'm not really a fan of fruity scents, so I wouldn't have chosen this particular one, but if the product is good it all evens out.

Personally, I was not thrilled with this box. I received two repeat samples from past boxes due to the fact that this is the first box of a gift subscription, and the box was one of the blue December boxes instead of the purple January boxes. I don't understand why a first box in a gift subscription, even if it is a renewal or addition to a current subscription, has to be generic. Sure, it's understandable if it's the first box for a completely new subscriber, but if it's someone already in the system, why not handle it like it's just a regular renewal? I contacted Birchbox with my concerns, and they were kind enough to send me a free mystery sample pack and a promise to share my idea with those higher up in the decision making process, which I thought was extremely great customer service.

Outside of that, the hair protectant and the shaving cream just weren't my style. However, I'm always happy to receive a new Harvey Prince perfume sample, so that saved the box from being a total dud, in my opinion. I'm sad that my January Birchbox was underwhelming, but it doesn't taint the service for me. No subscription box service will get it right 100% of the time, and this just happened to be a month where Birchbox was off the mark. I still fully recommend it to anyone not yet on the Birchbox train!

What did you get in your January Birchbox? Do any of these samples catch your eye?

Stay gorgeous, peaches!
