My 2017 Resolutions

my-2017-resolutions, new-years-resolutions

Happy 2017, everyone! I hope everyone has been able to kickstart the New Year off right and is ready to take on these next twelve months like a total boss. Is it just me or is anyone else thrilled to pieces to finally be able to put 2016 behind us? Even if we leave out politics, 2016 truly seemed like one of those years where more bad happened than good. Thankfully, 2016 is firmly in our rearview and it's time to look forward to all of the possibilities that 2017 holds. And we all know what that means: RESOLUTIONS!

If you were a reader of my blog last year, you'll know I kicked off 2016 in much the same way with a list of resolutions I wanted to achieve throughout the year. And it's safe to say that I missed the mark on all except one of them (Spoiler Alert!: It was to read more books. Check!). I won't lie and say that I always keep my resolutions, but 2016 was an especially bad year in terms of staying on track. Keeping that in mind, I'm hoping that 2017 will see me buckling down a bit more and really getting shit done. So, without further adieu, here are my personal, health, financial, and blogging goals for the upcoming year!

PERSONAL:

1. Declutter my life. I am the absolute worst at parting with things, even with items as small and inconsequential as an old receipt. But I've come to realize that when I look around at my home, I'm just not happy with all of the stuff that has become the backdrop of my life. This year, I'd like to do a massive declutter and only keep the trinkets and essentials that truly bring me joy, and create capsule collections for my wardrobe and makeup.

2. Set up my home office. Ever since we moved into our home in 2014, I've been meaning to set up an office to have a proper space to blog in. Instead, the room originally slated to be an office has become a catch-all junk room (see Personal resolution #1!). Part of the reason we bought this particular house is because it had enough rooms for me to set up a work area. And yet I've never taken the time to actually clean it up and use it for its intended purpose. After two years, I think it's about time for my office to finally become an office.

3. Cut back on meat consumption. I'm a huge animal lover, and so I've been flirting with the idea of going vegetarian (or at least pescatarian) for a very long time. This year I'd like to take stock of just how much meat I'm eating and then slowly start cutting back. I'll kick things off by going meatless at least one day a week and go from there. Hopefully by the end of the year, meat will at the very least only be a sometimes meal.

HEALTH:

1. Lose weight. I know, I know! This is such a cliche. In fact, this was one of my resolutions last year. And while I did lose a little weight, I was shy of my goal by about six pounds. I've got a lot of health issues that would benefit from being a little lighter, so again this year I'm hoping to shed some more of my fluff in the hopes of feeling better physically, mentally, and emotionally. 20 pounds is my goal, which seems more than doable!

2. Manage my medications. Last year saw me diagnosed with several chronic illnesses and a severe vitamin deficiency. That meant that I found myself the new owner of an in-depth medication regimen. And when you have that many prescriptions, it's easy to forget to take medications on occasion. But medicine only works when you take it regularly, so this year I'd like to work out a system to help me properly manage my medications and keep my health on track. Not the most fun resolution, but utterly necessary!

FINANCIAL:

1. Find areas to cut back. My husband and I have always tried to live inside our means as much as possible, but that doesn't mean there aren't areas where we could scale back a bit more to reach our savings goals. This year I'd like to really sit down and look at our spending to re-tool our budget and make sure we're making the best of what we have.

2. Save for a rainy day. While we always try to keep a little cash on hand, it's not nearly as much as it should be. In 2017, I want to ensure that we've got a small nest egg put away in case any emergencies arise or any large purchases need to be made. It's not glamorous, but practicality is becoming more and more important as I get older. What could be more practical than socking away spare funds?

3. Pay off medical debts. 2016 was a really difficult year for me health-wise, and that means I racked up quite a few medical bills. Even though I have insurance, there was still a lot I had to cover out of pocket. By the end of the year, I'd like to have all of my medical debts paid off (and hopefully not many new ones to add on top!).

BLOG:

1. Be consistent! If you read my resolutions for 2016, you'll know that this is the exact same first blog goal as last year. And while I failed in a big fashion with this in 2016, I'm hoping that 2017 will finally be the year I get it together and make something of this blog. The only way to do that is to be consistent with my posting schedule. Ideally, I'd like to post at least twice a week. But I'm also going to give myself the space to re-tool things as needed and to accept that sometimes life gets in the way of even the best laid plans. Hopefully with some proper planning and a little post scheduling, this goal will be much easier to accomplish in 2017.

2. Diversify my content. Over the last three years I've pigeonholed myself into writing mainly about beauty. And while I love makeup and can't resist a new release, I want to be able to write about more than that. I have so many things I'm passionate about and I want to share that with all of you instead of worrying about whether I'm staying "on brand". This year, I'd like to explore new content and push myself out of my comfort zone.

3. Start a YouTube channel. Okay, so this one is more of a hope than a resolution, but after three years of blogging, I think it's about time I venture into the YouTube waters. It's something I've been wanting to do for quite awhile, but I've always been too nervous to dive in. I'm hoping that this year I'll shake off the nerves and dip my toes into the YT waters. And if I do, you'll get to see me in all my awkward, goofy glory!

    1. Happy New Year to you, too, Lauren! Decluttering seems to be a big one on everyone's list this year. As far as YouTube, I'm just so nervous! I'm such an awkward person and the idea of getting on camera scares me. Not sure the world is ready to see me in all my goofy glory! xo

  2. Megan,

Happy 2017! It sounds like you have some amazing goals lined up for the year! I wish you the best of luck as you work through your goals!

Decluttering is also a big goal for me as well as to lower my meat consumption! I don't think I could ever go full vegetarian, but I do want to start incorporating vegetarian days into my week.

    1. I'm not sure if I could fully go vegetarian, either. But I'm with you in wanting to incorporate vegetarian days and meals into my schedule. Even the smallest cutback in meat consumption can do so much good for both ourselves and the world. Good luck, Kendra! xx

  3. I'm with you on the need to decluttering and to blog consistently. I started off 2016 with high hopes only to fail miserably. I've worked through some issues so I'm looking forward to a better 2017.

    1. I feel like we need to start a de-cluttering support group considering everyone has that in their resolutions this year! Good luck this year. Fingers crossed that 2017 is amazing for you! xx

  4. Lovely goals for 2017! I really agree with decluttering my life. Luckily, I´m moving in summer so that gives me a definite chance of throwing away all the stuff I don´t need. I love your idea of consuming less meat! I´m thinking of having maybe one vegan day a week (as I already live non-dairy)!

    1. Good luck with your move this summer! Moving can definitely help when it comes to de-cluttering as it's almost a necessity when you're switching homes. A vegan day every week sounds like a great plan. Let me know if you come across any good recipes! xx

  5. Some of my own resolutions echo yours! I think with a lot of things (gym, being consistent with blogging) it gets easier and easier as you do it more often. Funny how that works...

    Happy New Year!

    1. You're totally right that things get easier and easier as you do them more often. It's just the starting and staying consistent that's so hard! Any tips for getting past that initial hump? xx

    1. Thanks, Ursula! I definitely wanted to go for goals that seemed easy to achieve while still creating a big impact. Otherwise, I think I'd get too overwhelmed. I'm still deciding about the YouTube channel. Just need to get past the nerves! xx
